Chiefs DT Jones says Bengals rematch 'will be a battle'

The AFC (American Football Conference) championship game held on the local 30th (Sunday) will be Cincinnati, including quarterback (QB) Joe Burrow and wide receiver (WR) Jamal Chase in the previous match. It's a chance for the Kansas City Chiefs' defense to get even after being beaten by the Bengals' offense.

The Bengals smashed the Chiefs defense in Week 17 of the season. Burrow had 446 yards and four touchdowns while Chase had 11 catches for 266 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 win for the Bengals.

Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones said Thursday when asked if he learned anything from their last matchup.

"It turned out they were better than us. At the end we were in crisis on the finish line. We had some bad calls. It's going to be a battle. It's definitely going to be a dangerous one.

In their last matchup, the Chiefs held off the Bengals on their first two drives, allowing only 25 total yards. The Bengals went out of control after that, scoring on six of their seven drives. A penalty on the goal line gave the Bengals time , and kicker (K) Evan McPherson scored a field goal to end the game.

Burrow and Chase each set NFL records in the game, making Burrow the first player in NFL history to record 400+ passing yards, 4+ touchdowns and 0 interceptions in two consecutive weeks (16th of the season). Baltimore Ravens). Chase set a new rookie record per game with 266 receiving yards against the Chiefs, breaking the Super Bowl-era rookie receiving record set by Justin Jefferson.

The stage for this fight is Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think the most important thing is preparation,” Jones said of his rematch win.

Any player who has recorded 400 or more passing yards in a regular-season game has gone 2-2 in that season's conference championship rematch. Patrick Mahomes won against the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and Joe Montana won against the Los Angeles Rams in 1989. Meanwhile , Mark Brunel lost to the New England Patriots in 1996 and Jay Schroeder lost to the New York Giants in 1986. No quarterback had 300 passing yards in either rematch.

A player who has 200 or more receiving yards in a regular-season game—as Chase did—goes 7-4 in a playoff rematch against the same opponent. Legend Don Maynard, who had 118 yards against the Oakland Raiders in 1968. In the past 11 cases, the average receiving yards remained at 48.7.

Jones and Chiefs pass rushers will play a key role in stalling the explosive Bengals offense. Jones made two of the four sacks the Chiefs' defense gave Burrow in Week 17. Burrow had nine sacks in the divisional round against the Titans.

The Chiefs' defense, led by defensive coordinator (DC) Steve Spaggnolo, has seen rapid growth in the middle of the season, but has allowed 28.75 points per game over the last four games, including the playoffs.
